AP EUROPEAN HISTORY SUMMER PREPARATION
9Dear Prospective AP Students and Parents,
Welcome to the world of Advanced Placement History! You are to be commended for considering the challenge of this course. We will have a year filled with historical discovery and rigorous intellectual exercise as we prepare for the AP History Exams in May 2021.
The TCS Advanced Placement program is an introductory college-level course. It is designed to provide the student with the factual knowledge and analytic skills necessary to critically examine the source materials upon which our knowledge of history is built. Detailed in-depth knowledge, critical thinking, and written expression are all stressed in this course. College credit may be earned by a strong performance on the AP Exam at the end of the school year.
The AP History classes are known for their enormous work load, density of information, and necessary skill development. Therefore, only students who have developed emotional maturity and self-regulation, who exhibit a strong work ethic, take ownership of their own education, and demonstrate academic discipline are encouraged to take these classes. Once students fall behind, it is very difficult to make up the lost ground. Since the classes are run primarily as a "flipped classroom," students are required to spend several hours every week of the year engaging in deep reading and writing in their own time. Students are expected to take responsibility for their learning by reading, writing, and watching assigned teaching videos before coming to class for application.
Summer Preparation
Because of the rigorous requirements, it is important that we get a good start before the school year begins. You will be required to have completed an equivalent of three weeks of work before the school year begins. The work is due on the first Friday of the first week back and failure to complete this work satisfactorily will result in ineligibility for the class.
Please don’t hesitate to contact me at [email protected] you have any questions.
I look forward to a wonderful year with you,
Mrs. Forde

SUMMER PREPARATION STARTS HERE
Summer Preparation
The pacing of AP Euro is VERY fast so it is normal to feel that you are drinking out of a fire hydrant of information as we get going. The summer work will give you a running start and a chance to be sure you want to take on this challenge. The work will be your “ticket” into the class on the first day we return to class. It will serve as proof to yourself that you have already acquired the work ethic and intrinsic motivation required for this demanding college course. Additionally, the grades you earn will serve as a “grade cushion” to start the year off well, as long as you make a good faith effort with the assignments.
Note
1. Since you have not had a Pre-AP class, I am not assigning work from the College textbook for your summer reading. Instead, you will be using the much simpler study guide book to help you get a sense of where we will start out in August, and what your at-home commitment will need to be through the school year to be ready for the AP national exams in May. In class I will primarily give overviews and then focus on application through historical thinking and writing skills, so having at least a cursory understanding of the material to begin with will help you greatly.
2. I do have a website for this course but this is currently under construction since the College Board has recently altered the structure of the course. You can watch my progress through the summer at https://fordeapeuropeanhistory.weebly.com/. J Just kidding, but if you do want some idea of what it will look like in August, you can check it out.
3. I will invite you to the new google classroom for AP Euro via your school email and post this summer prep info there too. Please accept my invite and in this way I will know that you have received this summer prep information.

Something like this example: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Mead-Composition-Book-Wide-Ruled-100-Sheets-9-3-4-x-7-1-2-Black-Marble-72936/14668429?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=7122&adid=22222222227009587307&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=40939795352&wl4=aud-834279575966:pla-78875874272&wl5=1015504&wl6=&wl7=9010902&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=115781685&wl11=online&wl12=14668429&veh=sem&gclid=Cj0KCQjwiYL3BRDVARIsAF9E4Gc9Sw9567oL5cO7-1zt5TZTbVcuCVQzuXwUtVGb_irCZe-2Yf9Po50aAuamEALw_wcB

B. The Assignments
1. The Renaissance and the Scientific Revolution
a. Read: Chapter 1, pages 4 – 20 slowly and thoughtfully.
b. Take notes: As you read take notes only in BLACK or BLUE ballpoint ink in your composition notebook (see example in Google Classroom).
- You do not need to write down every detail.
- Read a paragraph or two and then rewrite the main ideas in your own words if possible.
- Always include any headings in the text.
- Include words in bold print in a way that helps you remember what they mean.
c. Multiple Choice: Write a heading “Multiple Choice” after your note-taking.
On pages 22 – 25 you will see a form of MC called “stimulus-based multiple choice” - the only type of MC you will have in AP testing. Carefully read the questions 1 – 8 and answer them the best you can. Go back and look for answers if you need to.
d. Watch these videos: Now let me introduce you to a fan favorite: Tom Richey.
Write a heading for each video in your notebook, then write some general notes for each. Add any new terms and definitions you learn from each teaching.
Video 1 : The Italian Renaissance - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIcmPM0zwQQ
Video 2: Classicism = https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-EDxoHp4fJ0
Video 3 : The Northern Renaissance - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWNZh913458&list=PLfzs_X6OQBOxudw-bxvxBuTWvh6bwaVhQ&index=6
(What you have just completed is typical for at-home work for about 1 – 2 weeks, since we will do more applied work in class.)
________________________________________________________________________________________________________
2. Conflicts over Religious Pluralism
a. Read: Chapter 2, pages 28 – 44 slowly and thoughtfully.
b. Take notes: As you read take notes only in BLACK or BLUE ballpoint ink in your composition notebook using neat headings and following the same guidelines as Chapter 1.
c. Multiple Choice: Write a heading “Multiple Choice” after your note-taking.
On pages 46 – 47, carefully read the questions 1 – 8 and answer them the best you can. Go back and look for answers if you need to.
d. Watch this video:
Write a heading for this video in your notebook, then add any new terms and definitions you learn from each teaching.
Video 4 : Causes of the Reformation -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4RNYQscm0w&index=2&list=PLfzs_X6OQBOyDGOzZItg2wHAZLetAuFbi
